Even in the Arctic where adventures abound, staying aboard the world’s only hotel ship frozen in sea ice, wondering when the next 700-kilo polar bear is going to walk beneath the bowsprit takes some beating.
But getting there by dogsled, pulled across the snows of Svalbard by a team of Alaskan huskies under your own command puts this Arctic adventure in a league of its own.
Join us in the footprints of Fritjof Nansen. We offer a special program where you can experience how to mush your own dog team of Alaskan Huskies. All necessary training will be given so you will be confident working your own dog sledge team. You feed, take care of their welfare and have a chance to bond and feel the amazing fellowship between humans and dogs. You spend two nights at our comfortable Basecamp ship in the ice, a schooner with the suitable name Noorderlicht, built in 1909. In its 100 years of history it’s been well taken care of and is still very prominent and comfortable. The boat has 10 comfortable two-bed cabins, and there are good onboard facilities. You will during your stay be served a 3-course dinner in the evenings and breakfast. Lunch will be enjoyed in the field. There is a licensed bar within the ship open until midnight. From the first of March until mid-May, the ship is frozen into the beautiful Tempel fjorden waiting for today's adventurers!

Day 1 Longyearbyen
Arrive in Longyearbyen and take the airport shuttle to the Basecamp Trapper’s Hotel, a unique lodge furnished with driftwood, slate and animal furs. No two rooms are the same, except for the comfortable beds and bathrooms, and you’ll be left in no doubt that you’ve reached the wilds of Svalbard.
Day 2 Basecamp ship in the Ice
Travel with your guide to the dog kennel at Bolterdalen where 90 happy Alaskan huskies will be waiting for you. Participants are responsible for their own dogs and the guide will give a lesson in how to handle a sled team. When ready, you’ll mush into the white open landscape, making the 70 km journey to the Basecamp Ship in the Ice, a 100-year-old schooner frozen each winter in the waters of Tempelfjorden and your base for the next two nights.
Day 3 Tempelfjorden
After breakfast, set off with your dog team to explore the breathtaking scenery around Tempelfjorden. Dogsledding in Svalbard is an experience that touches the soul, with the panting of the dogs and the scraping of the sled against the snow the only sounds to break the silence.

Hotel, Activity and Local Information
Follow in the footsteps of polar heroes Nansen and Amundsen and sleep on board our ice-bound hotel ship in Tempelfjorden. Basecamp Spitsbergen gives you the chance to experience the Arctic wilderness like the explorers on the polar ship “Fram”, more than 100 years ago.Far from the civilisation of Longyearbyen, you will discover a level of comfort and facilities that are barely imaginable so far into the wilderness. Basecamp Ship in the Ice has 10 well-equipped cabins with a total of 20 beds, hot/cold water, 220 V power supply, shower and toilet. The ship has two lounges and a fully-licensed bar. The lounges have a selection of polar literature. The ship’s chef prepares delicious meals every day, three-course dinners, freshly baked cakes and bread. A night on board the world’s only ice-bound hotel ship is a true polar experience. The British Sunday Times has twice named the ship one of: “5 places to visit before you die”.
Tempelfjorden and Basecamp Ship in the Ice are about 60 km northeast of Longyearbyen. The ship is ready to host modern adventurers from the middle of February until the middle of May. The ship’s location makes it a unique starting point for accessing the wild, untouched Svalbard landscapes. The trip to the ship goes through broad valleys, over snow-covered glaciers and passes the mountains that are so typical of Svalbard. A landscape in shades of blue and white. You will experience a stillness and a quality of light that are found nowhere else. If you’re lucky, perhaps you’ll catch a glimpse of the “King of the Arctic”!
Basecamp Trapper’s Hotel is situated at the heart of Longyearbyen, among restaurants, pubs, banks and shops. It is absolutely Longyearbyen’s most amazing hotel; decorated in traditional trapper’s style with driftwood, sealskins, pictures and objects that illustrate the past and current life in the Arctic. Despite the rustic style, the hotel has a high standard and modern comforts. Basecamp Trapper’s Hotel has 16 rooms and can accommodate more than 40 people. Two of the rooms are suites, with separate bedrooms, lounge and bathroom. You are welcome to relax with an exciting polar story or other Arctic literature in our pleasant Trapper’s Hotel. You can watch the Arctic skies and the surrounding mountains through the glass ceiling of the “Cognac loft”. Guests can use wireless internet or have free access to a guest PC.
