Kirkenes is located in Northern Norway close to the Finnish and Russian borders on the shores of the Barents Sea. Kirkenes is also the home of the most northern snow hotel; Kirkenes Snow Hotel. The Snow Hotel has been a huge success; this season will be the third and it has already made it to National Geographic’s “The World's 25 Best New Adventures” list! The exceptional activities such as king crab fishing and snowmobile safari to the point where Norway meets Finland and Russia make Kirkenes a perfect destination for those who are after something different.
This 5 day Arctic experience includes three excursions: snowmobile and husky safari and king crab fishing. Spend the last night in a Snow Suite surrounded by snow and ice sculptures.
The price is based on 2 people sharing a room and includes return economy class flights to Kirkenes via Oslo, all airport taxes, 3 nights at Rica Hotel Kirkenes, overnight in igloo at Kirkenes Snow Hotel, breakfasts daily, return airport transfers, welcome drink and 3 course dinner at Snow Hotel and morning sauna, 4 hour snowmobile safari, 4 hour husky safari and king crab safari with a local fisherman and lunch at his home.
Departures every day 15 December 2010-20 April 2011, also over Christmas and New Year. Please note that some departures may require an overnight in Oslo or Kirkenes.
ITINERARY
Day 1
Fly from London to Kirkenes via Oslo. Transfer to Rica Kirkenes Hotel. You may choose to include half board at the hotel.
Day 2
After breakfast it is time to set off for a 50 km long snowmobile safari (4 hours) through the snow covered fjord and over the beautiful surroundings fells. Picnic lunch is served en route before returning to the hotel.
Evening is for leisure.
Day 3
Today we learn how to handle a husky team. After short introduction it is time to put it into practice: we set off for a 4 hour long husky safari. You will be driving your own husky sledge. We will stop en route for a hot picnic lunch.
A warming sauna will be waiting for you at the hotel.
Day 4
After buffet breakfast check out of the hotel. A local fisherman will pick you up for an unforgettable tour in the Arctic climate, the king crab safari. We will catch king crabs with the experts and later prepare the catch for lunch at fisherman's home. This is a unique opportunity to visit a Norwegian home!
At 6pm you’ll be taken to Kirkenes Snow Hotel by kick sledges. A dinner will be served by the open fireplace. You will spend the overnight in a spacious Snow Suite sleeping on warm reindeer skins and thermal sleeping bag.
Day 5
Warming sauna is waiting for you in the morning before breakfast. Return to Rica Hotel Kirkenes by kick sledges and transfer to the airport.
Fly home via Oslo (or stay extra nights in Kirkenes or Oslo).
Hotel, Activity and Local Information
Kirkenes Snow Hotel opens its third season in early January 2009. Inside an amazing snow building you will find Snow Suites decorated with snow sculptures, Snow Bar for cool drinks and Snow Reception for the coolest check-in! You will be taken to the Snow Hotel by kick sledges (Arctic taxis). Dinner is served by the open fire in a cosy Gabba restaurant. You will sleep on a snow bed which is covered with reindeer skins in a thermal sleeping bag. A warming sauna is waiting for you in the morning.
The hotel sits on top of the hill and has amazing views over Kirkenes. The hotel was refurbished in January 2006 and now presents itself as a modern hotel with attractive rooms and public areas. Many of the rooms have a magnificent view of Kirkenes and the Varangerfjord. All rooms are equipped with hairdryer, TV, shower and bath as well as underfloor heating. Several rooms have a parquet floor.
