The laid-back coastal city of Bergen is the gateway to Norway’s western fjords. It is surrounded by seven mountains and the panoramic views from the top of Mount Fløyen are well worth the climb. Bergen has been an important settlement since medieval times and was subsequently dominated by Hanseatic merchants for 400 years. At the heart of the city is Old Bryggen, a unesco World Heritage-listed area of colourful wooden and stone warehouses next to the bustling harbour of Vågen. We recommend a stroll along the quayside, stopping for seafood at the fish market, and basing yourself at the award-winning Grand Terminus Hotel, known for its elegant architecture and convenient location.
