Classic tour of Faroe Islands

Day 1

Fly from London Stansted to Vágar Airport with Atlantic Airways. Collect the rental car at the airport. Rest of the day is free to experience Vágar independently. We suggest a trip to the village of Bø to enjoy the view of the “Tindhólmur” islet. Overnight accommodation on Vágoy.

Day 2

On your way north we suggest a fascinating boat trip to the Vestmanna bird cliffs, sailing between the cliffs into some of the caves. This trip takes about two hours. Then on to the village of Tjørnuvík, which is surrounded by steep mountains. From here you can see the unique rock formations known as the “Giant and the Old Hag” off the north tip of Eysturoy. Drive across the only bridge across the Atlantic to the village of Eiði on Eysturoy, with its unique scenery and a spectacular view of Slættaratindur (882 m), the highest mountain in the Faroe Islands. Day 3

Enjoy a day in Gjógv, which is known for its distinctive natural harbour. Here you can take a two-hour walk on your own with views of the bird cliffs, “Djúpini” and the beautiful valley of Ambadalur. Overnight accommodation on Eysturoy.

Day 4

From the village of Leirvík, drive through the undersea tunnel to Klaksvík. The tunnel is decorated with lighting art by the famous Faroese artist Tróndur Patursson. From Klaksvík you have many opportunities to explore the other Northern Islands: Kalsoy, Kunoy, Viðoy, Svínoy and Fugloy, each with its own particular dramatic scenery. Day 5

On your way to Tórshavn, we suggest you stop at Gøta to visit the new church with its fantastic glass art decorations. In Syðrugøta, stop at Tøting, a combined wool spinning mill and gallery where you can buy Faroese wool products. Overnight accommodation in Tórshavn.

Day 6

Spend this day visiting the green island of Sandoy, also called the Saga Island. Sandoy is flatter than the other islands, but it is also rich in history and spectacular scenery. Take the ferry “Teistin” from the harbour Gamlarætt to Skopun. In the village of Sand you will be treated to coffee and cake in a private home. Overnight accommodation in Tórshavn.

Day 7

Visit Kirkjubøur before leaving Tórshavn. Kirkjubøur is the oldest centre of history and culture in the Faroe Islands, with a picturesque old farm which has been owned by the same family for 17 generations. See the incomplete Magnus Cathedral and the small Olavskirke church from the Middle Ages. Upon arrival in Vágar, we suggest you take an unguided walk to a beautiful waterfall called “Bøsdalafossur”, from where you can see the free-standing cliff of “Geituskoradrangur” and Vágar’s spectacular and rugged southern coast. Day 8

Drop off the rental car at the airport and flight home with Atlantic Airways.
