Grand tour of Norwegian Lapland

Experience the delights of Norwegian Lapland on this exclusive tour!

Norwegian Lapland, or Finnmark is a wonderful destination for a winter holiday. Here you will experience what it is like to sleep in an igloo, drive your own dog sled, hunt for the Northern Lights, visit North Cape, catch a king crab and drive a snowmobile.

The tour will take you to Alta, North Cape and Kirkenes, which all have their own specialities. Alta is home to Sorrisniva Igloo Hotel, formerly known as Alta Igloo Hotel. In addition to Igloo Hotel, many exciting excursions are available in Alta such as Northern Lights hunt and dog sled safaris, both which are included in the tour price. After Alta, the tour continues to North Cape, the northern most point of Europe. Visit the North Cape Hall and enjoy a glass of champagne before continuing on Hurtigruten to Kirkenes. Sail along the coastline and stop in many small fishing villages. Kirkenes which lies by the Barents Sea and shares borders with Finland and Russia, is famous for king crab safaris. Take part to king crab fishing and enjoy your catch for lunch. Kirkenes’ location also offers excellent opportunities for snowmobile excursions during which you’ll visit the Norwegian-Russian border.

Price is based on 2 people sharing a room and includes return economy class flights to Alta via Oslo and back from Kirkenes via Oslo with SAS, all airport taxes, transfer from Alta airport to Sorrisniva Igloo Hotel, 2 course dinner and overnight in igloo, dog sled safari at Holmen Hundesenter, Northern Lights hunt in Alta, 1 night at Rica Hotel Alta, bus from Alta to North Cape via Honningsvåg, entrance to North Cape Hall, glass of champagne (or soft drink) and certificate, Hurtigruten voyage from Honningsvåg to Kirkenes in unspecified cabin inc. dinner and breakfast, king crab safari in Kirkenes inc. lunch, snowmobile safari to Norwegian-Russian border inc. lunch and 1 night at Rica Arctic Hotel in Kirkenes, breakfasts every morning and transfers as described.

ITINERARY

Day 1
Fly to Alta via Oslo with SAS. Transfer to Sorrisniva Igloo Hotel, formerly known as Alta Igloo Hotel. Dinner is served at Laksestua restaurant.

The indoor temperature in the igloo hotel varies between -4 c and -7 c degrees. You spend the night wrapped up comfortably in sleeping bags and reindeer skins.

Day 2
Warm up in the sauna and have breakfast at the Igloo hotel.

At 10:00 you’ll be transferred to Holmen Hundesenter for a dog sled safari.

Drive your own dog-sledge or relax and enjoy the scenery as a passenger. We take you through the pine forest following the banks of the Alta River or up through Altadalen valley to the Finnmarksvidda mountain plain. We serve coffee/tea and cakes in our lavvu or outdoors around an open fire. We explain how we train our huskies, and prepare both ourselves and the huskies for the Finnmarksløpet race, a true test of stamina and Europe’s longest dog race covering 1000 km.

After the safari, transfer to Rica Hotel Alta and check in.

Tonight you will hunt for the Northern Lights. We pick you up at your hotel at 19:00 and take you by car to the best viewpoints, far from the light pollution around the town. The guide can help with your camera settings to help you capture the best shots of this wonderful phenomenon.

Day 3
Breakfast at the hotel. Take an early morning bus from Alta to Honningsvåg and continue to North Cape where you will arrive around midday.

Arrive in North Cape. Enjoy the view!
The North Cape Hall offers a film presenting North Cape’s 4 seasons, a souvenir shop and the coffeehouse is open serving snacks and warm drinks. Champagne and North Cape certificate is included.

At 2 o’clock return from North Cape to Honningsvåg and board Hurtigruten ship. Hurtigruten departs Honningsvåg at 15:15.

Enjoy a dinner onboard and enjoy the scenery while the ship stops in remote fishing villages.

Day 4
Breakfast onboard. Hurtigruten arrives to Kirkenes at 10:00.

You will be picked from Kirkenes harbour for king crab safari. Travel by rubber boat and/or snowmobile to catch the king crab. The guide will tell you more about king crab fishing. Fresh king crab lunch is served after the safari.

Transfer to Rica Arctic Hotel and check in. Rest of the day is free for leisure.

Day 5
Breakfast at the hotel.

At 9 o’clock you’ll set of for a snowmobile safari to Norwegian-Russian border. We take the bus from the centre of Kirkenes to Sandnes (10 min.). Guided snowmobile safari along the Norwegian/Russian border on the Pasvik river. Visit an old Norwegian farm from the 1850s, bear’s lair and Øvre Pasvik National Park Centre. Light meal, coffee and dried reindeer meat served during trip. Driving distance approx. 80 kilometres. Return to the hotel around 3pm.

Overnight at Rica Arctic.

Day 6
Breakfast at the hotel and transfer to Kirkenes airport. Fly home with SAS via Oslo.

Your accommodation is booked in Rica Hotels, which are first class hotels with good locations. All accommodation includes private facilities and breakfast. Most of the hotels have restaurants.

Sorrisniva Igloo hotel (Alta Igloo)

The temperatures inside the Igloo remain constant between minus 4 and minus 7 degrees centigrade.You will sleep on natural reindeer hide mattresses and special sleeping bags designed to keep you warm in temperatures down to minus 30 degrees centigrade.

The hotel is decorated with superb ice-sculptures and outside in the 'relax area' there are two heated whirlpools where you can sit under the starry skies and hopefully view the Northern Lights overhead.
