Husky safari in Norwegian Lapland

from £1,550 per person

Join Sven Engholm, the 11 time champion of Europe’s longest husky race and his eager huskies for a 4 day long winter break. Enjoy an all action adventure in the unspoilt nature of Norwegian Lapland.

Engholm’s Husky Lodge is located in the heart of Norwegian Lapland next to the Karasjohka river. Sven has built the log cabins himself and they ooze charm and cosiness. During your stay at Husky Lodge you do two day-trips. One day is left for leisure when you can relax or maybe try one of the optional activities. The tour includes full board so you are sure to treat your taste buds with Norwegian delicacies!

This tour is suitable for first-timers as well as more experienced husky mushers. Most participants are rather adventurous people who relish the chance to learn new skills and like to live life to the fullest. Neither age nor gender is a barrier - all have equal qualifications for handling the dogsleds. The guides will match the number of huskies in your team with your strength. You don’t have to be exceptionally fit or strong to be able to drive your own sledge. If you for some reason do not want to drive your own dog-team, you can ride comfortably wrapped in reindeer skin in the guide's sled.

There’s no better way of seeing the unspoilt nature of Finnmark than behind a husky sledge!

Price includes return economy class flights to Alta via Oslo, return transfers Alta-Husky Lodge-Alta, all meals starting with supper on first day until breakfast last day in the tour program, (if not otherwise stated in the tour program), all necessary tour equipment, arctic proof clothing for dog mushing, guide and activities as described in the program, double room at the lodge, (extra charge for single room or own cabin) and dormitory accommodations on the mountain cabins. Supplement applies for Christmas departure on the 23rd of December.

Departures on 6, 13, 23 and 30 December 2009; 6, 10, 17, 24 and 31 January; 28 February; 23 and 29 March; 4 and 22 April 2010.

ITINERARY

Day 1
Fly with SAS to Alta via Oslo. Transfer to Engholm’s Husky Lodge. Dinner is served at the lodge while you hear a short briefing of the tour.

Days 2 and 3
On these days you do two separate day long husky safaris. Picnic lunches are served by a campfire. You return back for dinner to Husky Lodge and overnights.

The morning is spent organizing the teams of huskies and learning the basics of caring for your team and driving the sleds. After an introduction you will have your "own" team of 4-6 dogs. We will drive in varied terrain and stop for a lunch break around an open fire. You are accompanied by a professional guide who will share his/her knowledge and admiration of nature and outdoor life with you.

Day 4
Today is free for you to explore at your leisure. There is always a lot happening on Engholm’s Husky Farm: there are huskies of all ages; puppies are learning to socialize while older ones enjoy their relaxing days off too. You can visit the ‘Husky musher’s Library’ which is an impressive collection of books on husky breeding and mushing.

Alternatively you can take optional excursions such as a snowmobile safari, visit to a reindeer farm, snowshoeing or cross country skiing. The National Sámi Museum, Norwegian Sami parliament with guided tour, Sami art gallery, Sápmi theme park and the local knife smith are also worth visiting.

Day 5
After breakfast it is time to say goodbye to Sven and his huskies. Transfer to Alta and flight home via Oslo.

The tour can be extended either at Engholm’s Husky Lodge, Alta Igloo or Oslo. Please contact us for prices and ideas.
