Northern Lights Special, Iceland

Lake Myvatn is one of the best places in the world to view the Northern Lights (Aurora Borealis). It is also an area of outstanding natural beauty where you can discover the wonders of the Icelandic winter landscape.

During this break you can relax and watch some of the natural wonders or spend a few days enjoying activities such as snowmobiling, super jeep safaris, cross-country skiing and sightseeing.

This tour is a combination of a couple of days spent in the capital Reykjavik and 2 days by Lake Myvatn. You will also visit Iceland's second city, Akureyri. For those interested in trying out activities there are plenty to choose from such as activities on the frozen lake - such as bowling, cricket, skating and mini golf. There are also sightseeing tours on offer - you can choose to visit an Icelandic farm, a power station or museums.

Price is based on 2 people sharing a room and includes return economy class flights from Heathrow/Manchester, all airport taxes, return airport transfers by Flybus, 2 nights at Hotel Loftleidir in Reykjavik, 2 nights at Sel Hotel Myvatn, return economy flights Reykjavik-Akureyri-Reykjavik, all airport taxes, return guided transfers from Akureyri airport to Myvatn and vice versa, sightseeing tour of the area, sightseeing tour of Akureyri, 2 dinners at Myvatn and breakfasts every morning.

Departures from London daily 1 October-13 December 2010 and 1 February-31 March 2011. Other dates on request.

Departures from Glasgow and Manchester in October 2010: Mon, Tue, Fri and Sat. Other dates may require extra nights. November-March departures on Mondays and Saturdays. Wednesday and Friday departures require extra nights.
 

 

ITINERARY

Day1
Scheduled Icelandair flight from the UK to Keflavik and transfer to your central hotel in Reykjavik.

Day 2
After breakfast you fly from Reykjavik (domestic airport which is located in central Reykjavik) to Akureyri where you will get picked up and transferred to Lake Myvatn. Sightseeing around the area which is famous for its natural beauty and geological wonders. After the tour there will be an introduction of optional activities available. Enjoy dinner at the country-side hotel and a cosy evening. When the sky is clear, the Northern Lights will dance around, so make sure to step outside before going to sleep.

Day 3
Today you can enjoy the leisure activities in the area, since there are multiple tours available. Dinner will be served at the hotel. It is ideal to end the evening with a late night relaxation in the outdoor hot tub and enjoy the so often seen Northern Lights dancing around in striking colours across the Arctic sky.

Day 4
In the morning, you visit the town of Akureyri, the trade and cultural centre of North Iceland, beautifully resting in a scenic fjord. Enjoy sightseeing of the town and its beautiful sights before your flight back to Reykjavik. Self transfer to your hotel for an overnight stay.

Day 5
If you are returning to the UK on the afternoon flight then you will have time to take a stroll around Reykjavik, do some shopping or why not visit the famous Blue Lagoon en route to the airport? Transfer back to the airport and direct flight back to Heathrow or Manchester
 

Hotel, Activity and Local Information

Hotel Loftleidir

The hotel is located near the domestic airport and is only a 15–20 minute walk to the city centre and has good bus connections to the center of town. Located next to Oskjuhlid area, a popular outdoor area with walking paths and the Pearl, a modern edifice and the best viewing spot in Reykjavik, housing the Historical Museum. The hotel features 220 rooms all equipped with phone, TV and refrigerator (stock-up service available). The restaurant "Lon Restaurant", located on the ground floor. Indoor swimming pool, hair salon, gift shop.

Hotel Myvatn

Hótel Mývatn provides you with an ideal location from which to experience the wonders of Mývatn and its surroundings. The hotel has 35 rooms which all have a bathroom, telephone, radio and TV. Each room can also be connected to internet. All the rooms are beautifully furnished with solid mahogany and the aim is to create a friendly atmosphere for the guests. The hotel is wonderfully placed with some of the region's pearls such as the pseudo-craters within a couple of minutes distance. The magnificent view to north from the hotel covers the Skútustaðagígar pseudo-craters.
