Cultural treasures rank highly among the merits of Norway’s capital, and a visit to some of the city’s fabulous museums and galleries is a must. The Viking Ship Museum, which houses three 9th century Viking vessels, is well worth a look. The Munch Museum, which displays the work of celebrated Norwegian artist Edvard Munch, and the Ibsen Museum, dedicated to the life of the country’s most influential playwright, are other highlights. Performances of the Norwegian National Opera and Ballet in the remarkable glass and marble Opera House are also not to be missed. Finally, you might like to visit Vigelandsparken – where 212 fantastical sculptures by Gustav Vigeland provide a wonderful setting for summer picnics – and Oslofjord, where boat trips, swimming and island hopping make a great city break. In the city itself, we recommend staying at the Grand Hotel Oslo. It’s an elegant landmark on the city’s grandest street, Karl Johans Gate, where Nobel Prize laureates stay when they’re presented with their awards.
