South Greenland is a region full of contrasts, known for its flowering plains and fertile valleys, ice-filled fjords, numerous glaciers and mineral-rich mountain landscapes. The region has a well-developed farming industry with extensive grazing pastures for sheep and horses and some of the best-preserved Norse ruins.
Narsaq means "the plain" in Greenlandic, and the name is due to the large green plain on which the town lies. With its central location in a huge complex of fjords, Narsaq is a good place to begin a tour of South Greenland. The glaciers north of the town ensure that there are almost always icebergs around Narsaq, and the fjords around the Narsaq peninsula are rich in seals, salmon, trout and minke whales. The temperature varies from plus 22º C (72º F) in the summer.
Optional excursions are available in Narsaq. Among the highlights of the programme we can mention the sailing between the icebergs in Eric's Fiord between Narsarsuaq and Narsaq, the viking ruins, the beautiful arctic scenery including the Inland Ice Cap as well as experiencing the daily life in a small Greenlandic town. One evening it will be possible to have the famous Greenland Buffet with a presentation of the National Costume.
In South Greenland beautiful turquoise mountains of ice are frequently seen. They are often smaller than those in the north, but just as breathtaking. Many glaciers are also easily accessible in South Greenland.
