Finnmark, Norway’s northernmost extreme, is a wildlife-dotted wilderness of high mountains and sweeping valleys. And, in between nights spent in a cosy timber lodge and a sleek, city-centre hotel, you’ll explore it all on a full range of included excursions. You’ll enjoy everything from exclusive city tours and a private trip to Europe’s northernmost point to wilderness dinners, waterfall hikes and husky walks. There’s even a chance to meet the indigenous Sami peoples. Lastly, you’ll also take in the region’s gorgeous waterways, with a canoe trip, whale-spotting fjord cruise and a canyon sailing in a traditional longboat. It’s all illuminated by the ethereal glow of the Midnight Sun.

Day by day itinerary

  • Day 1 » UK/Alta husky lodge

Your experience of Norwegian hospitality begins the moment you land, with a local representative meeting you at the airport before your included transfer to your unique accommodation. In fact, you’ll stay on a working husky farm, in a cosy timber-panelled lodge. And, you’ll get to meet these four-legged friends straight away, picking out your favourites for an evening hike towards a nearby mountaintop. Along with spectacular forest views, you’ll even be treated to a wilderness dinner along the way, served around an open fire. It’s all made that bit more beautiful by the nightly appearance of the Midnight Sun.

    Stay: Trasti & Trine

    Meals: Dinner

  • Day 2 » Longboat cruise & Midnight Sun hike

After a breakfast of locally sourced favourites, you’ll be brought out to Alta Canyon for a true local tradition – a cruise in a narrow timber longboat. Your experienced guide will keep you entertained with local stories as you admire the towering cliffs and green-dappled banks before you arrive at the idyllic Gabofossen waterfall. It’s all capped off with a hot drink and Norwegian waffles. Come the evening, your next guided excursion will see you hike along the Beskades mountains’ old postal road, crossing rivers on natural bridges to arrive at your waterfall goal. Here, you’ll enjoy a meal around an open fire before descending along a fairy-tale valley, keeping your eyes open for moose and rare butterflies illuminated by the Midnight Sun.

    Stay: Trasti & Trine

    Meals: Breakfast, Dinner

  • Day 3 » Alta tour & fjord cruise

After breakfast, a private tour will showcase the unique delights of Alta, Finnmark’s Arctic capital. Although the Alta Museum is a special highlight for its 7,000-year-old rock carvings and the Tirpitz Museum is an education on the city’s role in WW2, the city’s contrasts are best summed up by a pair of basilicas. The Alta Church is a 19th-century gem, while the Northern Lights Cathedral is a postmodern shimmer of titanium curves. It’s then time for your fjord safari, where you’ll cast out a fishing line in between sightings of sea eagles and possibly even porpoises. You’ll end the day in your central, Scandi-chic accommodation.

    Stay: Thon Hotel Alta

    Meals: Breakfast, Dinner

  • Day 4 » The North Cape

Today, you’ll be treated to a bucket-list favourite with a trip to continental Europe’s northernmost point. A private driver and guide will bring you out, through forested valleys and rolling hills to climb up and onto the rugged Finnmarksvidda high plateau before arriving at the coast. Along the way, you’ll stop for any photos as your guide keeping you informed about the Arctic’s history and its hardy people. Then, once at the North Cape itself, you’ll receive a certificate to commemorate your trip and a sparkling wine to celebrate before an included lunch and the return journey home.

    Stay: Thon Hotel Alta

    Meals: Breakfast, Lunch

  • Day 5 » Canoeing & Sami experience

You’ll hit the waters again today, this time slowing things down with a canoe trip. Heading along the Alta River or one of the local lakes, you’ll paddle out among the Arctic wilderness for the chance to spot everything from white-tailed eagles to ducks and the odd moose as you pause only for an included lunch on the riverbank. Then, come the evening, you’ll learn about the region’s human heritage on a private tour. You’ll be brought out to a nearby reindeer-herding camp where you’ll meet members of the indigenous Sami community, learning about their fascinating way of life with a visit to a traditional lavvu tent. Here, you'll be educated on everything from Sami food and their colourful clothing to joik – the Sami's unique way of singing.

    Stay: Thon Hotel Alta

    Meals: Breakfast, Lunch

  • Day 6 » Depart for UK

After a final breakfast, an included transfer will see you to the airport for your flight home.

    Meals: Breakfast
