This unique trip celebrates the best of Swedish art and design, with private tours of Stockholm’s world-leading museums and exclusive invites to the personal studios of the country’s most esteemed makers. Let the curator himself show you around Stockholm’s oldest and largest handicraft co-operative, enjoy a private tour of the National Museum’s Design Depot, and be tempted by the work of Ulla Forsell – one of the pioneers of studio glass in Europe.

Throughout, you’ll be accompanied by Flow Gallery director Yvonna Demczynska and art historian Cathy Giangrande. Together, they’ve organised a wealth of arts-focused trips, everywhere from Japan to Denmark. You’ll also be treated to full-board dining throughout, with meals at some of the city’s finest restaurants. Expect the best in contemporary Swedish innovation and design.

Alongside all entrance fees and private group tours in a collection of the city's best museums, we’ve also included private group transfers throughout, bringing you out of the city to Gustavsberg and the lush-green islands that form the Stockholm Archipelago. Then, each night, you’ll return to one of the city’s best hotels – a designer property immaculately converted from a brutalist bank.

Day by day itinerary

  • Day 1 » Weds 18 Sep: UK/Stockholm

Flying out to Stockholm with your hosts, you’ll be met on arrival and brought to your luxury hotel. Between its rooftop bar and marble-accented, you’ll be greeted by one of Europe’s most significant hotel art collections, along with welcome cocktails and canapés. You’ll then begin your programme of exclusive excursions, with a private tour of the Italian Cultural Institute. It’s designed by one of the most influential Italian architects of the 20th century, Gio Ponti, his timeless furniture also decorating each floor. The first of your full-board meals is equally special, with dinner at one of Stockholm’s finest restaurants – Tak. Here both menus and design (by architect Gert Wingårdh) marry delightful river views with Nordic ingredients and Japanese overtures. The ceramics are even handmade by Anna Lindell in her workshop at her childhood home.

  • Day 2 » Stockholm Archipelago

You’ll begin each day with breakfast at your hotel, enjoying the likes of seasonal fruits, smoothies and such cooked-to-order favourites as ricotta pancakes. Then, after taking in the studios of weaver Åse Pärson and glassblower Ulla Forsell, you’ll be brought out to Artipelag – a design-led art exhibition tucked away in the Stockholm archipelago. Along with lunch in its celebrated restaurant, your private tour will also focus on the work of the Italian artist, collector and decorator Piero Fornasetti. The afternoon is then spent at the showroom and shop of Gustavsberg Konstall, a leading purveyor and forum of Swedish and international contemporary crafts. It’s the perfect preamble to a visit to Cargo Collective’s 50-strong assortment of ceramicists and artists. You’ll also take in the studios of Mia Göransson, one of Sweden’s most acclaimed ceramists, and Carina Seth Andersson, who’s best known for her distinctive glass and ceramic design. Her commissions include the likes of Iittala, Skruf, Svenskt Tenn and Marimekko. Returning to the city, dinner is at the National Museum’s restaurant, stunningly redesigned by Matti Klenell. Its restaurant serves up classic Swedish cuisine to splendid views over Strömmen bay and the Royal Palace.

  • Day 3 » The Galleries and Studios of Stockholm

Today is given over to central Stockholm. The first is Kaolin, an artist-owned-and-run space founded back in 1978. Today, the group has grown to 19 potters, all working at the gallery, giving you the opportunity to meet with the artists who exhibit here. This is followed by Blås & Knåda, which has the country’s largest collection of contemporary Swedish studio pottery and studio glass. The superlatives continue with Konsthantverkarna – Stockholm’s oldest and largest handicraft co-operative. Here, curator Boel Henriksson will treat you to lunch and a tour, taking in works by Kina Björklund. This afternoon will then see you on to the new Berg Gallery and Platina; run by Sofia Björkman - it’s a showcase of unique art jewellery from around the world. It all culminates with a guided tour of Svenkst Tenn, an interior design store that celebrates some of the most skilled designers and craftsmen of our time, including Josef Frank. Dinner is at the Michelin-recommended Hillenberg – a stylish take on a classic brasserie.

  • Day 4 » Stockholm's Museums and more

You’ll be brought out to Millesgården this morning, an artists’ home built in 1908 by sculptor Carl Milles and his wife, painter Olga Milles. Today, it’s a well-renowned museum and vast sculpture garden. We also hope to incorporate a visit to the showroom of Märta Måås-Fjetterström, whose rugs and tapestries are of exceptional artistic significance and will be exhibited at the Royal Palace. After lunch at Fotografiska, one of Stockholm’s best museum restaurants, you’ll then have a choice of things to do this afternoon, making use of your Stockholm sightseeing pass. Perhaps you’d like to stay on at Fotografiska’s photography exhibits, or join Yvonna and Cathy on a visit to Skansen. As the world’s first and oldest open-air museum, it details Swedish history from humble farmsteads to 18th-century mansions. The pass also grants access to Nordiska Museet, Sweden’s largest museum of cultural history, and Vasa – a historic warship dredged from the sea bed. It’s the world’s best-preserved 17th-century ship and Scandinavia’s most-visited museum.
