Delve into the vast wilds of the Canadian Arctic in style with a holiday at a small wilderness lodge on the banks of Ennadai Lake in Nunavut in the Northwest Territories, 400 miles east of Yellowknife, and witness the spring or autumn migration of birds and animals including vast numbers of Qamanirjuaq caribou. For wildlife lovers and outdoor adventurers, there is nowhere else like this.

Day by day itinerary

  • Day 1 » Yellowknife

Fly from the UK via Calgary to Yellowknife, set on the northern shores of Great Slave Lake in the remote Northwest Territories. Check into your hotel and explore the Old Town. From here it’s 250 miles to the Arctic Circle, but with no real roads in between, Yellowknife is the true gateway to Canada’s Arctic north.

    Stay: Chateau Nova

  • Days 2-7 » Arctic Haven Wilderness Lodge

Depart Yellowknife by private charter plane to travel to the Arctic Haven Wilderness Lodge. Located along the treeline of the Arctic Barren Lands region, the lodge is perfectly placed to view the 350,000-strong Qamanirjuaq caribou herd that spreads out across the region during migration. Ecologically rich, the surrounding wilds also host grizzly bears, Arctic wolves, wolverines and black bears. Hiking, kayaking and boating are on offer in August and September, while the onset of autumn also signals the arrival of the aurora borealis. Alternatively, choose to travel in May when there’s still plenty of snow around and snowmobiling, cross-country skiing and kite-skiing are all available.

    Stay: Arctic Haven

    Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

  • Days 8-9 » Return to Yellowknife

Depart the lodge and return to Yellowknife, where you'll have one final night. Perhaps visit the Bush Pilot Monument, stroll down the rather curiously-named Ragged Ass Road and spend time at the Prince of Wales Northern Heritage Centre. The following day, head for Calgary and board your overnight flight back to the UK.

    Stay: Chateau Nova
