» 12 day tailor-made holiday

» Price from: £2,755

Canada’s Yukon is a stunning province of mountains, lakes, glaciers and rivers home to moose, elk and grizzly bears. Set against this scenic backdrop, visitors here will also find a rich and varied history centred round the Klondike Gold Rush of the late 19th century, when an estimated 100,000 prospectors arrived in search of their fortune. Explore Kluane National Park, an internationally-protected natural refuge, and take in the views on a journey to Tok, known for its active sled dog culture. Travel to Dawson City to learn about the Gold Rush, and see how these remote areas have captured imaginations and intrepid explorers for generations.

Day by day itinerary

  • Days 1-2 » Whitehorse

Depart London on your daytime flight to Whitehorse. On arrival, collect your car and make your way to your hotel. The following day is free to explore and an included visit to the 700-acre Yukon Wildlife Preserve provides a first foray into the Yukon’s natural landscape. From arctic foxes to wood bison, woodland caribou and elk, there are plenty of animals for the visitor to spot and the preserve itself covers different habitat zones including aspen parkland, boreal forest and black spruce bog.

    Stay: Best Western Goldrush Inn

  • Day 3 » Skagway

Take the South Klondike Highway, which connects the Yukon Territory with the Inside Passage ferry system in Alaska, also called the Skagway Carcross Road and known for its striking scenery as you descend from the White Pass to Skagway. This memorable drive winds its way through the subalpine landscapes of the Tormented Valley to Tutshi Lake and the much-lauded Emerald Lake. The remainder of the day is free to explore Skagway, Alaska's ancient home to the Tlingit people and one of the main way stations for prospectors during the Klondike Gold Rush.

    Stay: Westmark Inn

  • Day 4 » Haines

Take the ferry along the spectacular Lynn Canal, actually a deep crystalline fjord to Haines, home to some 4,000 American bald eagles who gather in force every autumn and make for a memorable sight in the trees.

    Stay: Hasingland Hotel

  • Day 5 » Haines Junction

Drive over the Chilkat Pass to its bald eagle reserve before arriving at Haines Junction, a part of the Yukon Territory that is home to the Southern Tutchone people and Kluane National Park. First Nations peoples continue to use the land for traditional hunting and fishing, and you'll visit the Sheep Mountain Visitor Center to experience its interpretive programme about local flora and fauna.

    Stay: The Raven Hotel

  • Day 6 » Kluane National Park

Skirt the boundaries of the Tatshenshini-Alsek Provincial Park and Kluane National Park, part of the largest continuous area of protected wilderness on earth. Canada’s highest peak, snow-capped Mount Logan, and the world’s largest non-polar icefields provide the backdrop for a day spent in the crisp, fresh air of this northern wilderness.

    Stay: The Raven Hotel

    Meals: Breakfast

  • Day 7 » Tok

After a short morning hike, drive north along the picturesque shores of Kluane Lake. Look out for Dall sheep grazing on the mountain slopes before joining the scenic Alaska Highway to Tok, the ‘dog mushing capital of Alaska’.
