Originally built in 1888, the Banff Springs Hotel is spectacularly located at an altitude of 1400m within the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Banff National Park, in the Canadian Rocky Mountains. Constructed in the style of a Scottish baronial castle, it sits just above the Bow Falls and the nearby thermal springs which lend it its name. The town of Banff is a short walk away and the nearest airport is Calgary International, a little under two hours’ drive from the hotel. Taxis and shuttles can be arranged, and there is also a regular bus service between Banff and the hotel.

Eat

Few hotels can match the dining options in the Fairmont Banff Springs, with 17 different restaurants and lounges available. The Bow Valley Grill serves three meals a day, plus weekend brunch, and in the evenings you can pick whatever flavour of cuisine suits your mood: the 1888 Chop House, Samurai Sushi Bar, Castello Ristorante, the alpine-inclined Waldhaus Restaurant, and more. A range of bars are also at hand for guests to relax in; the Rundle Lounge at the heart of the hotel offers comfortable seating, an all-day eating menu, drinks until 1am, and some of the best views in the region. In-room dining is also available 24 hours a day.

Sleep

This is a large hotel, with 764 rooms and suites spread across three different wings. Discerning travellers will want to ensure that they have direct access to some of the hotel’s splendid mountain views. Upgrade from standard Fairmont Room to Deluxe for extra space, or go one better and check into the new Stanley Thompson wing of the hotel, with larger living areas and bathrooms. For the more romantically-inclined, suites are available inside the turrets of the hotel’s castle structure, with private spiral staircase and gorgeous views of Banff National Park.

Do

There are activities available for all seasons and tastes to help guests make the most of the hotel’s scenic mountain location: hiking, fishing, river rafting, horseback riding, skiing, snowshoeing, skating, and a 27-hole championship golf course. After a day outdoors, return to the comfort of the hotel and treat yourself at the Willow Stream Spa, named Canada’s top hotel spa in 2015. The spa includes indoor and outdoor heated pool and hot tub, open until 10pm at night, even when it’s minus 20 outside, with moonlit views of the mountains. The hotel also contains its own bowling and entertainment centre, including table tennis and pool tables, and a licensed bar.
