Lying halfway between Norway, Iceland and Scotland in the North Atlantic Ocean, the Faroe Islands are an archipelago of 18 wild, rugged islands brimming with astonishingly dramatic scenery at virtually every turn. Think soaring cliffs lashed by frothing waves, pyramid-shaped mountains towering above narrow fjords, treeless moorlands roamed by sheep and Highland cattle, and postcard-perfect villages characterised by turf-roofed houses and rich Viking heritage. Although part of the Kingdom of Denmark, the Faroe Islands have a proud and distinct cultural identity; they have their own flag, their own language (closely related to Old Norse), their own parliament (the Løgting) and a set of unique customs and traditions forged over centuries living in relative isolation from the rest of Scandinavia.

This remote scatter of islands is connected by an intricate maze of sub-sea tunnels, ferries and helicopters, making them much easier to explore today than ever before. Streymoy is the largest island and home to Tórshavn, one of the world’s smallest and most picturesque capital cities. Many visitors choose to base themselves here and plan day trips using a hire car, as most points of interest are within an hour’s drive of the capital.

Klaksvík, the second-largest town in the Faroe Islands, enjoys a spectacular setting surrounded by steep mountains and fjords on the island of Borðoy, and makes an ideal base for exploring the northern part of the archipelago.

The Faroe Islands are served by year-round flight connections from Copenhagen, Reykjavik and Oslo, while there are seasonal direct services from London Gatwick (June – August) and Edinburgh (March – December). Summer is generally the most popular time to visit, when there’s almost endless daylight, the weather is at its most favourable for hiking, and puffins can be seen nesting on the sea cliffs.

Having been there and explored the archipelago themselves, our experts are ideally placed to help you plan your ultimate Faroe Islands adventure.
