Discover the best of the Faroe Islands on this short self-drive

» 4 day tailor-made self-drive

» Price from: £1,050 pp incl. flights

Venture to the isolated Faroe Islands, between Britain's northern shore and Iceland. Embark on a four-day self-driving route, travelling from Vagar, through Bird Island and to the Vestmanna cliffs, ending in Torshavn. This short break is bursting with excursions and immersion in Faroe culture.

Day by day itinerary

  • Day 1 » Vagar

Fly to Vagar airport in the Faroe Islands. Pick up your rental car and drive to Torshavn where you'll check in to the four star Hotel Føroyar, situated up on a hillside with beautiful views of Torshavn and the islands. The roof of the hotel is grass covered, in traditional Faroese style.

    Stay: Hotel Foroyar, Torshavn

  • Day 2 » Bird Island – Mykines

After breakfast today you will embark on a day trip to Mykines also known as the bird paradise thanks to its rich variety of feathered wildlife. See up close the impressive gannets that only breed on Mykinesholm and the charming puffins with their colourful beaks. You'll also cross a footbridge over the Atlantic Ocean in order to reach Mykinesholm's lighthouse, dating back to 1909. It is situated at the most westerly point of the Faroe Islands – next stop North America!

First you will drive through beautiful coastal scenery to the start point of the tour: the village Sørvágur, in Vágoy, where you'll board the ferry to Mykines. The sailing time is approximately 45 minutes one way.

Your local guide will meet you upon arrival in Mykines, where you will have a guided tour to Mykineshólm and a picnic lunch.

Return to Hotel Føroyar later that evening – we highly recommend pre booking a table at Koks restaurant, located at the hotel. Koks won the Nordic prize for best restaurant in 2014 and features beautifully cooked local Faroese cuisine.

    Stay: Hotel Foroyar, Torshavn

    Meals: Breakfast, Lunch

  • Day 3 » Saga Museum & Vestmanna Cliffs & Lunch

After breakfast today you will embark on a combination of excursions starting with a boat trip to the Vestmanna Bird Cliffs, the most popular tourist attraction in the Faroe Islands. Here, you'll sail into grottos, through narrow sounds, and close to the almost 700 feet high vertical cliffs, where birds nest each summer. After the boat trip you'll have lunch and then visit the only wax museum in the Faroe Islands, the Saga Museum. Through 17 lifelike figures, created by prominent Faroese artists, placed in realistic surroundings you can follow the dramatic history of the Faroe Islands.

The excursion will depart at the harbour in the village of Vestmanna, Streymoy at 10am. You will enjoy a lunch buffet during the trip and return back to Vestmanna around 2pm. This evening we recommend a sailboat excursion to Nólsoy – where you can enjoy a cave concert and dinner. The excursion takes you to the village of Nólsoy, passing beautiful bird cliffs, and the Light-house at Borðan. While you take a walk around the charming small village, the skipper will prepare a three-course meal onboard consisting of delicious seafood from the Faroe Islands.

    Stay: Hotel Foroyar, Torshavn
