Lithuania’s capital Vilnius, has a Baroque heart that rival’s that in Prague. Walk the winding cobbled streets and climb the tower of Gediminas Castle for superb views over the city.

The historic second city, Kaunas, is home to plenty of art and culture; the former capital Trakai on the shore of Lake Galve makes a smart base from which to go sailing and windsurfing; Druskininkai is a small riverside spa town and Siauliai is an historic hill covered in devotional crosses.

Away from the urban centres, travel to the Curonian Spit, a swathe of sand that separates the Baltic Sea from the eponymous lake. Here, the Curonian Spit National Park is full of sand dunes and pine forests popular with walkers and wildlife watchers on the look out for elk, deer and wild boar.
