This invigorating itinerary takes you deep into the heart of the Finnish wilderness and Syöte National Park, a rolling expanse of hills and boreal forest that, under the white wintry duvet, resembles an extraterrestrial field of stalagmites. Just 90 miles from the Arctic Circle and close to the border of Syöte National Park and two excellent ski resorts, Iso-Syöte is Finland's southernmost fell and sees more snow in a year than anywhere else in the country.

Day by day itinerary

  • Day 1 » Depart for Rovaniemi

Your holiday starts with a flight to Helsinki, where you’ll connect with another flight up to Rovaniemi before taking the two-hour transfer to Iso-Syöte Hotel. After checking into your hotel room, spend the rest of your day getting accustomed to your new environment. For a more traditional experience, ask us about an upgrade to one of Iso-Syöte’s homely log cabins.

    Stay: Iso-Syote hotel, Finland

  • Day 2 » Iso-Syöte

You’ll have a whole day to enjoy the many exciting excursions on offer at Iso-Syöte. These range from driving your very own team of dogs through the forest to hiking with showshoes, keeping an eye out for local fauna as you pass. Unusually for this part of the world, downhill skiing is also available, with 17 slopes and 10 lifts offering superb opportunities for skiers and snowboarders of all levels. Then, in the evening you can take a snowmobile out to search for the Northern Lights.

With another two free days, you’ll have ample time to enjoy more optional activities with the likes of reindeer safaris, kicksled adventures and ice fishing excursions among a whole host of options. Alternatively, you might simply choose to relax with a day of steaming saunas and hot-tub soaks at the Arctic Spa. Further afield, the excellent Ranua Wildlife Park – the world’s northernmost zoo – offers the chance to come face to face with brown bear, lynx, wolf, moose and deer.
