Norway is a winter wonderland within easy reach. What’s more, you’re guaranteed a blanket of pristine snow meaning your white Christmas can be filled with everything from tobogganing to snowmobiling. Mix in a range of unique, luxury accommodation and exciting city or remote destinations, and the country is an enticing prospect.

Destinations

Bordering the Arctic Circle, the impressive Malangen Fjord plays host to a resort of the same name and, come the Christmas period, it puts on a host of festive activities. Whether its husky safaris or snowmobile rides, you’ll make the most of the fairy-tale forested mountains that lazily drop down into the sea. And, after a day in the snow, return to your traditional Norwegian cabin and its enviable fjord-side location. You’ll also be introduced to the indigenous Sámi culture with an afternoon spent in a traditional lavvu – a type of conical tent – where you can learn about their fascinating past and traditions. Spend the evening in search of the Northern Lights and, come Christmas day, sit down for a full festive feast put on by the resort’s artisan chefs.

For something a bit different, experience the fjords with a rail trip through the Norwegian Alps. Perhaps make use of the Flåm railway for a journey into the mountains past frozen waterfalls framed by snow-capped peaks as you stay in idyllic rural villages. Or, book into a remote mountain resort or cabin for winter activities in picturesque locations.

And, if you’re looking for a grotto less travelled, look no further than Norway’s ice hotels. Reconstructed each year, teams of sculptors descend to bring blocks of ice to life with eerie statues and reliefs all lit by gently pulsing blues and whites. The finest examples can be found in Alta and Kirkenes, where their secluded Arctic Circle locations make for impressive Northern Lights views and winter activities. Travel even further north to Svalbard for stunning glaciers and jagged coastlines – the hunting grounds for an abundance of polar bears.

Activities

Each winter, Norway turns into something of a frozen playground. Test your mettle with snowmobiles skipping over ice fields or get closer to nature with a husky safari past pine tree forests. You’ll also have plenty of opportunities to strap on some snow-shoes or skis, perhaps venturing out for a spot of ice fishing or a cultural learning trip of Sámi communities. And, for the ultimate cold-weather activity, go in hunt for the dazzling neon of the Northern Lights with the Norwegian winter the ideal time to spot them.
