Faroe Islands to close for volunteer maintenance weekend

Set adrift in the Atlantic 200 miles north of the UK, the Faroe Islands are a wild land of jagged coastlines, green-carpeted fjords and grass-roofed churches. And, despite their secluded setting, more and more of us are making the pilgrimage out there.

Although over-tourism is far from a worry, the islanders are keen to preserve their pristine setting. So, between Friday 26 and Sunday 28 April, they’re inviting 100 volunteers to work on the islands’ major tourism sights, lending a hand to construct viewpoints, set up signs and build walking paths.

Other than the flight ticket, all accommodation, food and transport is taken care of, culminating in a celebratory meal on the Saturday night. Sign-ups are open now.

For those of you who can’t make it, or would rather keep your holiday a holiday, the Faroe Islands are open the rest of the year round. Indeed, with super-scenic routes and a network of island-linking tunnels, they're perfect for a unique road trip. Expect to spot everything from cutesy puffins and multicoloured villages to great rolling pastures as smooth as a snooker table. Indeed, it’s ideal for both a short getaway and a weeklong examination:
