At the heart of the city is Cathedral Square, which separates the medieval and nineteenth century sections of Vilnius. South of the Square is the Old Town, which is full of Baroque architecture and churches. West is the New Town, which is the focus of the city’s commercial and administrative life. 

Adjacent to here is the traditionally Jewish area of Vilnius. Once one of the most important centres of Jewish life in Eastern Europe, the population was decimated following the German occupation in 1941. There are still some historic sights such as the Moorish-style synagogue dating from 1903 to see.
