Norway’s second city is a scenic delight, a historic treasure trove surrounded by mountains that tumble down to the sea. It’s also gateway to the country’s emblematic western fjords – a network of waterways flanked by soaring cliffs, waterfalls and picturesque villages. And, while it might be best known as a summer destination, in winter Bergen is just as magical. As well as those famous fjords, you can expect everything from Christmas markets to quirky attractions such as the world’s largest gingerbread town. You’ll explore it all on this short break, as you spend three nights at a city-centre hotel and head out on an included Norway in a Nutshell Tour for a magical fjord cruise and a journey on the ultra-scenic Flåm Railway.

Day by day itinerary

  • Day 1 » Fly to Bergen

Fly out to Bergen and take the airport shuttle to the city centre, where you’ll check into your hotel. There's the Thon Orion, located just a short stroll from the historic fish market and UNESCO-listed Bryggen Quay. It’s the ideal base for exploring Bergen’s urban delights and even includes a light evening meal in the price. Or, perhaps upgrade to the 19th-century splendour of Opus XVI, housed in what was the city's largest bank. Run by descendants of Edvard Grieg – Bergen’s favourite son – it's named after the great composer’s famed piano concerto and serves up stylish rooms and superb gourmet dining . Once you’ve settled in, perhaps take a stroll to the waterfront, or jump on the funicular to the summit of Fløyen Mountain for sweeping views of the city and its pretty surrounds.

Stay: Thon Orion, Bergen , Opus XVI, Bergen

  • Day 2 » Optional excursions

We’ve left today free for optional excursions and time to explore Bergen. And, there are plenty to choose from, including further fjord adventures to Mostraumen or Hardangerfjord, and between November to 22nd December, Bergen’s colourful Christmas markets. Here, alongside the ferris wheels and food stalls selling festive treats and steaming-hot glasses of gløgg, you’ll find Pepperkakebyen – the world’s largest gingerbread town.

Stay: Thon Orion, Bergen , Opus XVI, Bergen

    Meals: Breakfast

  • Day 3 » Norway in a Nutshell

Today is a real trip highlight as you head out of Bergen on the iconic Norway in a Nutshell tour. It all begins with at city’s main railway station, where you’ll embark on a scenic trip along the Bergen Railway – the highest in Northern Europe – to Myrdal, passing shimmering lakes and mountains dusted with snow. You’ll then hop across platforms to join the Flåm Railway – the world’s steepest standard gauge track – for the spectacular descent to the shores of Aurlandsfjord. With some free time in Flåm itself, perhaps enjoy a beer-paired lunch at the excellent Ægir brewpub before cruising the World Heritage-listed Naeroyfjord. Finally, take the bus to the mountain station in Voss to rejoin the railway for the final leg back to Bergen.
