Dog sledding has long been a traditional mode of transport on Svalbard. Since the 1800s, intrepid explorers and hunters have used man’s best friend to make their way across the Arctic wilderness. Today, dog-sledding is the most exciting way to experience the magic of this frosty landscape, speeding through snow and ice as you breathe in the fresh northern air. On this trip you will have an opportunity to mush your own team of huskies, visit an ice cave and overnight in a cosy trapper-style cabin - bringing you closer than ever to nature.

Day by day itinerary

Day 1 » Fly to Longyearbyen
You'll depart the UK and arrive in Longyearbyen, the world's northernmost commercial airport. Depending on your arrival flight, you'll have the rest of the day to get to know this fascinating town, home to just 2,100 citizens. At just 650 miles from the North Pole, it's certainly remote, but you'll find a museum, art gallery, a cinema and restaurants here, nestled amongst the frozen tundra and glacial landforms. This is Philip Pullman territory; Svalbard is home to 3,000 polar bears - though not armoured - outnumbering the human population.

Day 2 » Husky sled ride to Foxdalen Cabin
Local experts will meet you at your accommodation in Longyearbyen to take you to the starting point of your sledding adventure. You will receive your tour clothes, a briefing and help packing your sled, before you head out with your qualified guide across frozen terrain behind a pack of eager huskies. Mushing through areas with no motorised transport, you'll visit a magical ice cave in the frozen heart of a glacier before arriving at the cosy Foxdalen cabin. You will help feed and settle the dogs, while your guide builds a crackling fire and prepares a hearty dinner. Depending on when you travel, you may be rewarded with the Northern Lights or the Midnight Sun - either way the dogs are on guard and act as an early warning system should a polar bear happen to pass.
Stay: Foxdalen Cabin, Svalbard

Day 3 » Return to Longyearbyen
This morning you'll set off across the exciting and varied terrain of Jansonhaugen for yet more husky-led escapades. Breathe in the fresh polar air and experience the deafening silence of the Arctic as you speed through snowy peaks and icy flats. After a good day behind the sleds, you will make your way back to the dog yard to say farewell to your furry friends. Depending on weather and conditions, you'll arrive back at your hotel for the late afternoon, to spend the evening recapping your adventures.
Stay: Radisson Blu Polar, Longyearbyen
Meals: Breakfast

Day 4 » Return to the UK
Today, depending on your return flight time to the UK, you may have time to do another excursion or visit Svalbard museum before your return shuttle to the airport. Alternatively, extend your stay in Longyearbyen and explore more of this Arctic outpost.
You do not need to have any dog sledding experience to enjoy this trip, but you do need to be of average physical fitness and like dogs! Ideal for couples and groups of friends, this tour is also suitable for children over eight, making it the ultimate family adventure.
We can also offer a longer 5-day/4-night break incorporating a two night husky adventure, staying in Foxdalen Cabin for one night and mushing on to Svalbard Exhibition Lodge for your second night in the wilderness - see the pricing tab for details.
