Easily accessed from either Bergen or Oslo, the majority of people arrive via the port of Kristiansand. A short break destination in its own right, the city has museums, harbourside restaurants and family-friendly beaches. There’s a flourishing festival scene in the summer too.
Other highlights in the area include the country’s southernmost tip at Lindesnes and the historic harbour town of Grimstad, once home to dramatist Henrik Ibsen.
If you tire of the areas attractions, then it’s just a short hop across the North Sea to Denmark, meaning that you can take in other Scandinavian countries while touring the region.
