For many, the only way to explore Svalbard is by boat, bringing you among its spectacular fjords and rugged coastline. This route is a particular favourite, centring on Pyramiden – a Russian ghost town abandoned some 20 years ago. Here, a Russian guide will bring you among this fascinating mining settlement, pointing out its fading Soviet-era buildings. Its twin highlight is the monumental Nordenskiöld Glacier, whose giant wall of ice serves as the backdrop to your included lunch. In between it all, you’ll sail along beautiful fjords as your expert guide brings the landscapes, history and wildlife to life. It is worth noting that if you travel around late May or early June, pack ice may prevent you from visiting Pyramiden itself. But, you will have a better chance of spotting bearded seals, Arctic foxes and polar bears, who use the ice to hunt. It’s all bookended by included transfers to and from your accommodation.
