You'll stay overnight at some of the region's most charming properties, where you can savour the splendid fjord scenery and dine on the very best local cuisine in excellent hotel restaurants.

Day by day itinerary

  • Day 1 » UK / Bergen

Upon arrival, drive the short distance from the west coast's gateway city of Bergen to Os. Spend the night at the Solstrand Hotel & Bad, where there's the opportunity to kayak in the fjord, relax in the spa and enjoy a 'Taste the Coast' dinner.

    Stay: Solstrand Hotel & Spa

    Meals: Dinner

  • Day 2 » Os & Utne

Continue on to Utne the following day. As you travel through the Hardangerfjord to Utne, we suggest stopping to admire the renaissance gardens at the Barony Rosendal and the hamlet of Agatunet. The Hardanger Folk Museum in Utne is another attraction worth visiting. Stay overnight at the Utne hotel, a 300-year-old inn overlooking the fjord.

    Stay: Utne Hotel

    Meals: Breakfast, Dinner

  • Day 3 » Voss

Make your way to Voss, via an hour's drive and a short ferry crossing and there get a feel for traditional fjord life at the village's folk museum, Molstertunet. Check in at Fleischer's Hotel and dine at the Magdalene Restaurant, which is known for its hearty local flavours such as game, mutton and smalahove (smoked sheep's head), a particular local delicacy. Paragliding and whitewater rafting are among the activities available in Voss, to help you work up an appetite.

    Stay: Fleischer's Hotel

    Meals: Breakfast, Dinner

  • Day 4 » Balestrand

Take in the stunning west coast scenery as you drive at your own pace to Balestrand, one of the most picturesque villages in Norway. As you approach the Sognefjord, you might like to stop off at the Hopperstad stave church, while the fjord-side village of Vik is another possibility. Vik is known for the production of a pungent cheese called gammalost that's a good accompaniment to local salmon. Stay the night at the Kviknes Hotel in Balestrand and enjoy an evening walk among the Swiss-style villas fringing the fjord.

    Stay: Kviknes, Balestrand

    Meals: Breakfast, Dinner

  • Day 5 » Solvorn

A leisurely drive leads from Balestrund to Solvorn. The route passes an 850-year-old stave church at Urnes that's listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and it's well worth stopping to look around before carrying on to the Walaker Hotel in Solvorn. Here, you'll be able to try some more regional specialties, including fish from the fjord, plump strawberries and delicious local raspberry juice. This evening, return your hire car and continue your onward journey home.

    Meals: Breakfast

  • Day 6 » Bergen

Arrive back in Bergen after a full day of driving. There's a choice of routes back to the city, one option being to take the ferry from the village of Lærdalsøyri and cruise along the Sognefjord via the spectacular Nærøyfjord - one of the narrowest and dramatic fjords in the world. Return your hire car and check in at the Clarion Admiral hotel. There's time to take in a few of the city sights, such as the Fish Market and Bryggen, the old Hanseatic wharf.

    Stay: Clarion Collection Havnekontoret, Bergen

    Meals: Breakfast

  • Day 7 » Bergen / UK

The next day, make your way to the airport for your flight back to the UK.
