Day by day itinerary

  • Day 1 » Fly to Alta

Fly to Alta in northern Norway and make your way to your city-centre hotel. You’ll have the rest of the day to explore. Perhaps take in the ancient petroglyphs on display the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Alta Museum, or visit the Northern Lights Cathedral – a titanium-and-concrete modernist masterpiece consecrated in 2013.

    Stay: Thon Hotel Alta

  • Day 2 » Sorrisniva Igloo Hotel

With a free morning, take the chance for an optional excursion, with the likes of snowmobiling, husky safaris and snowshoeing all making the most of the dramatic winter landscapes of the Finnmark mountain plateau. Then, in the afternoon, an included transfer will see you out to the Sorrisniva Igloo Hotel – the world’s northernmost ice hotel. Explore its beautifully carved rooms and halls, all adorned with intricate ice sculptures, and call into the ice bar for a frozen cocktail before heading to the heated restaurant for an included three-course feast based on local culinary traditions. It’s then time to settle in for your night on ice, so grab your sleeping bag and bunk down on your frozen bed for an experience you’ll never forget.

Stay: Sorrisniva Igloo Hotel, Alta, Norway

    Meals: Breakfast

  • Days 3-5 » Northern Lights cruise

After a hearty breakfast, it’s time to head back to Alta in time for your expedition cruise. Over three memorable days, you’ll set a course along the mountainous coastline, sailing south via dramatic fjords and hidden bays. Along the way, a programme of stops and excursions will ensure a truly unique experience. Call into the town of Hamnes, one of Norway’s remotest coastal communities, taste Arctic whisky at the Bivrost Distillery and witness the power of nature at Jøkel Glacier, where huge chunks of ice crash into the Norwegian Sea. You’ll even have a chance to give something back to the fragile natural environment with a day spent cleaning one of the region’s beautiful beaches. And, as you cruise towards Tromso, remember to keep an eye on the sky for signs of the ethereal Northern Lights.

    Stay: MS Quest
