Norway’s landscapes during the blossoming spring are unparalleled – waterfalls thaw and cascade beside idyllic villages and fjord-framing mountains turn vivid shades of green. It’s all spectacularly discovered on this rail and cruise journey, where you’ll swap Oslo city life for UNESCO-listed fjords and snow-dusted peaks, ending amid Bergen’s Hanseatic wharf.

Day by day itinerary

  • Day 1 » UK to Oslo

After your flight from the UK to Oslo, you’ve got the remainder of the day to explore. Head to museums dedicated to the likes of the Vikings and Edvard Munch, indulge your taste buds in Aker Brygge’s renowned pier-side restaurants and marvel at Vigelandsparken’s 200 sculptures, where, from May onwards, ambling strolls take in spring blossoms that speckle the sprawling gardens. Then head to your hotel, the Thon Hotel Panorama, where ultra-contemporary furnishings nestle beneath oversized windows that let in striking city views.

    Stay: Thon Hotel Panorama

  • Day 2 » Oslo to Flåm

The majestic mountainscapes of Norway await today via an iconic rail journey; plunging fjords and striking precipices still dusted with winter’s snow vie for your attention before you board the spectacular Flåm Railway, all tumbling waterfalls surrounded by the new season’s verdure. The wood-panelled walls of Flåmsbrygga form your base for tonight, its rooms looking out to magnificent fjord views. To help make the most of your stay, we’ve included dinner at the Aegir Viking where you’ll enjoy a five-course “Viking plank”, pairing the likes of smoked reindeer and shellfish with carefully selected beers.

    Stay: Hotel Flamsbrygga, Flam

    Meals: Dinner

  • Day 3 » Flåm to Bergen

Today is a spectacular showcase for Norway’s most emblematic fjords. Begin with a cruise along the picturesque Aurlandsfjord, edged by towering mountain overhangs, before swapping its dramatic beauty for the narrow waters of UNESCO World Heritage-listed Nærøyfjord, encircled by farmlands clinging to mountain foothills. Then, navigate snaking hairpin bends on one of Europe’s steepest roads before a journey on the scenic Bergen Railway brings you through remote, rocky terrain en route to the city-centre comforts of the Thon Bristol Bergen. Here, polished wood floors and typically Scandinavian furnishings provide a contemporary base for your first evening exploring the city. Perhaps visit the colourful waterfront, home to some of Bergen’s best restaurants and bustling harbourside bars bathed in spring sunshine.

    Stay: Thon Bristol Bergen

  • Day 4 » Bergen

Enjoy a day at leisure today to explore Bergen’s myriad delights; the scenic Festplassen Gardens and the city’s popular fish market are both just moments from your hotel. The city’s standout attraction, however, is its Bryggen wharf, which began life as an important Hanseatic trading port. Take a stroll between the colourful quayside warehouses, followed by a ride up the Fløibanen funicular for panoramic views over the city and its shimmering fjord surrounds.
