De Historiske hotels are not ordinary hotels. They are landed estates, country houses, manors, timber-built hotels in pseudo-Swiss and Jugend style, old coaching inns and historic buildings that have been transformed into beautiful, romantic retreats in some of Norway's most spectacular locations. This ten-day self-drive through the western fjords takes in spectacular fjord scenery, romantic, historical hotels, breakfasts and dinners at De Historiske's world-class restaurants and fantastic opportunities for walking and other exciting outdoor activities.

Day 1 » Bjørnefjord
Arrive in Fjord Norway's gateway city of Bergen, collect your hire car and drive south to Os and the Solstrand Hotel & Spa, beautifully situated by the Bjørnefjord with magnificent views of the mountains and fjord. Enjoy a delicious Taste the Coast dinner in the evening.

Days 2-3 » Hardangerfjord
Drive to Hotel Ullensvang on the shores of the Hardangerfjord, the third longest fjord in the world and one of Norway's most dramatic. The hotel has been run by the same family since 1846 and has played host to such notables as Indira Gandhi and Henry Kissinger. Its spa and infinity pool may well have the best view in Norway.
Stay: Hotel Ullensvang, Hardanger

Days 4-5 » Sognefjord
Wind you way through more breathtaking fjord scenery to tiny and tranquil Balestrand, tucked away on the edge of the Sognefjord. Your base for two nights is the Kviknes Hotel, again right on the waterfront. Comprising both traditional Swiss-chalet-style buildings and more modern additions, Kviknes offers great food and wine and a fascinating in-house art collection. It also makes a great base for hiking in the area or exploring the fjords by boat.
Stay: Kviknes, Balestrand

Days 6-7 » Lustrafjord
The leisurely drive from Balestrand to Solvorn passes a UNESCO-listed, 850-year-old stave church at the sleepy town of Urne. Then, at Solvorn, check in for two nights at the Walaker Hotel, which has been run by the same family since 1640. It has its own bathing beach on the shores of the Lustrafjord, a delightful garden full of roses and lilacs and a large art gallery showcasing artists from all over Norway. Like everywhere in the region, there's wonderful walking to be had in the area. We particularly recommend the walk to Molden, 1,116m above sea level, with amazing views over Lustrafjord.
Stay: Walaker Hotel, Sognefjord
Meals: Breakfast, Dinner

Days 8-9 » Bergen
Return to Bergen for two final nights, staying at the superb Clarion Collection Havnekontoret. With its quayside location, you'll be perfectly placed for exploring the best of the city, taking in the World Heritage-listed Hanseatic wharf, visiting the city's famous fish market and taking in the views from the summit of Fløyen Mountain, reached by a scenic funicular ride.
