Venture off the beaten track and explore Iceland’s western remotes with your own 4WD and nights spent in a National Geographic Unique Lodge of the World. Wrapped in stunning glacier views, it even comes with its very own geothermal hot springs. Then, when you’re not taking in volcanoes, lava fields and lonely fishing villages, we’ve also included everything from a stay in Reykjavik to a soak in the famous Blue Lagoon and a trip into a glacier. Crampons and an all-terrain vehicle will see you explore its magnificent expanse and dramatic ice cave. Travelling over winter? Keep your eyes peeled for the Northern Lights.

Day by day itinerary

  • Day 1 » UK/Blue Lagoon and Reykavik

Flying out to Keflavík, you’ll pick up your 4WD hire car and make the short drive to the world-famous Blue Lagoon. With Comfort Entry included, you’ll be treated to a welcome drink, silica mud mask and plenty of time to soak in its mist-shrouded waters. Then, moving on to Reykjavik, you’ll check into your central accommodation. A trio of 18th-century buildings converted in contemporary Scandi-chic fashion, it’s a perfect introduction to the city’s contrasting historic and modern charms.

    Stay: Hotel Reykjavík Centrum, Iceland

  • Day 2 » Reykjavik to Husafell

You’ll have some time to explore this morning, perhaps taking in the citywide views from the ultra-contemporary Hallgrímskirkja Church or heading out on an optional whale-watching cruise. Then, leaving the city behind, you’ll map the jagged coast north before turning inland to arrive at your unique lodge. Here, an exceptional restaurant and artist-decorated rooms invite in views of the surrounding glaciers and rolling hills with floor-to-ceiling windows. You’ll also want to explore the next-door waterfalls before enjoying a dip in the lodge’s very own private hot springs. Along with hot tubs and soaking pools, the geothermals even power the hotel itself.

    Stay: Hotel Husafell, West Iceland

    Meals: Breakfast

  • Day 3 » Into the glacier

Today is focused on an included expedition into a nearby glacier. You’ll be brought out on a drive across a barren and deserted moonscape to Klaki base camp, where you’ll change into thermal clothing and strap on crampons. Then, boarding a specially adapted glacier vehicle, you’ll strike out over the ice, affording tremendous views over your remote surroundings. It’s then time to head into the ice cave itself. Spectacularly carved and ethereally lit, your guide will point out its dramatic layers, charting the region’s volcanic eruptions. After, there’s even the option to go snowmobiling.

    Stay: Hotel Husafell, West Iceland

    Meals: Breakfast

  • Day 4 » Snæfellsnes Peninsula

After breakfast this morning, we highly recommend setting out for a drive among the geologic wonders of the Snæfellsnes Peninsula. Highlights include Vidgelmir, one of the world’s largest lava caves, and Deildartunguhver – the most powerful hot springs in Europe. Its world-class wellness baths are best sampled with its delicious tomatoes, grown in geothermally powered greenhouses. There’s also everything from quiet fishing villages to mighty waterfalls and imposing volcanoes to discover. You might also want to explore the dramatic scenery with an autumn hike or an optional ride on an oh-so-lovable Icelandic horse.

    Stay: Hotel Husafell, West Iceland

    Meals: Breakfast

  • Day 5 » Depart for UK

After breakfast, retrace your route back down the coast to the airport and your flight home.
