With its island setting in the Ume River at the gateway to Europe’s last great wilderness, Granö Beckasin is an eco-retreat inspired by conservationist Jan-Erik Sjöblom’s lifelong love of native birdlife. Newly built hotel rooms and traditional cabins provide comfortable accommodation, but it’s the Bird’s Nest rooms that really steal the headlines; stylish rooms set high in the canopy with spectacular views across the river and its Lapland forest backdrop.

Day 1 » Granö Beckasin
Flying to Umeå via Stockholm, you’ll collect your hire car and wend your way through scenic Lappish countryside to Granö Beckasin, around an hour and a half away. On arrival, check into your cabin or eco-hotel room before settling down to the first of your included two-course dinners, which showcase the region’s abundant natural bounty.

Day 2 » Granö Beckasin
Today is left free for independent exploration. The local farm shop and café at Åbrånet is a great place to learn more about the local food scene and enjoy lunch in a delightful countryside setting. Or, perhaps head to Älgens Hus to visit Europe’s first elk farm; with a museum, maze and the chance to meet the ‘kings of the forest’ themselves, it’s first-rate family fun.

Day 3 » Granö Beckasin
Usually the preserve of winter visits to Lapland, today’s included activity is a thrilling husky safari through the forests surrounding the hotel. Rather than sleds on snow, however, your furry companions will instead pull you along on a lightweight cart on wheels. It’s a memorable three and a half hour adventure along narrow forest trails, passing marshes and shimmering lakes. With luck, you might just catch a glimpse of a wild reindeer or moose too.

Day 4 » Granö Beckasin
Check out of your hotel room this morning and head to the Bird’s Nest. Your private treehouse commands stunning views across the wilderness, and a full day at leisure means you’ll have plenty of time to contemplate the beauty of it all. In the evening, head to the restaurant for the last of your two-course dinners, perhaps accompanied by a glass of wine or locally brewed beer.
Meals: Breakfast, Dinner

Day 5 » Umeå/UK
After breakfast, check out and drive back to Umeå for your flight, via Stockholm, to the UK.
